Neon-quality spinel describes stones where the colour reaches an unusual saturation depth — appearing to glow or radiate light rather than simply reflect it. In Mogok red material, this is driven by the stone's natural fluorescence and the high refractive index of pure spinel. True neon material represents only a small fraction of each year's Mogok production. Even at sub-1ct with slight inclusions, the colour of a genuine neon red Mogok spinel is a different category from ordinary red gemstones.
